C&S Acquires Suffield Supervalu Warehouse

Brattleboro, Vermont-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. and Minnesota-based Supervalu announced Wednesday the completion of an asset exchange, in which Supervalu acquired Midwest operations from C&S and C&S acquired Supervalu's New England operations, including a leasehold on a 700,000 s.f. warehouse in Suffield, Connecticut.

C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. is a privately owned company with annual sales approaching $13 billion. The company is the 11th largest privately held company in the nation, as ranked by Forbes magazine, and the 2nd largest food distributor in the country. Founded in 1918, C&S provides distribution services to grocery chains and independent stores delivering to more than 3,000 locations from its distribution centers, including a 1.1 million s.f. facility located on King Springs Road in neighboring Windsor Locks, Connecticut. C&S customers include food giants such as Shaw's, Stop & Shop, Big Y and others.

Elaine Sarsynski, Suffield First Selectman, welcomes C&S to town and states that "We look forward to meeting with C&S management and supporting them as they move forward with plans for the building." Patrick McMahon, Director of Economic Development, states that "Anticipated benefits to the town are additional tax revenues from personal property, new jobs in the community, and corporate support of Suffield projects." The Supervalu site is one of Suffield's top ten taxpayers and with additional square footage being utilized it is expected that personal property taxes from equipment would increase as well. According to the company website, C&S employed over 9,000 people nationwide in 2002 and so it is a major employer. In addition, C&S administers a corporate giving program that enhances communities in which C&S has a presence. Howard Orr, Chairman of Suffield's Economic Development Commission, added that "We are pleased that C&S has acquired a leasehold interest in the Supervalu site. The company has seen a tremendous annual growth rate in the last several years and they are considered a nationwide leader in the logistics of grocery distribution. Suffield's location near Bradley International Airport and I-91 will be a great benefit to C&S."
