Farmland Preservation in Suffield

The Town of Suffield has been at the forefront of preserving open space in Connecticut for a number of years.  Part of this mission has been to aggressively pursue the Farmland Preservation Program with the help of State and Federal funding.  To date, approximately 1,300 acres of prime farmland has been permanently saved from development in the Town.  As Suffield's 1999 Plan of Conservation and Development states as its number one land use goal "Preservation of open space, agriculture, and rural nature of the Town through land perservation programs", this undoubtedly shows the commitment to agricultural land in Town.  As a part of this venture, Suffield has supported and encouraged the Suffield Land Conservancy who may obtain ownership or easements as well as promote the establishment of conservation easements in favor of the Town.

Farming is Suffield's heritage.  The Town of Suffield, through the Heritage Committee, has deemed preserving Suffield's farmland as its number one priority in achieving the Town goals to permanently preserve 55% of its residentially zoned land.  By partnering with Suffield farmers and the State and Federal Departments of Agriculture, the Town believes it can add significantly to the number of Suffield farms currently preserved through this program in the next five (5) years.  If you are interested in learning more about these programs and the progress Suffield is having with these initiatives, please do not hesitate to contact me by clicking on the link at bhawkins@suffieldtownhall.com.
