The Connecticut River forms the eastern border of Suffield. A bridge opened in 1893 giving residents direct access to work at the giant carpet mill in Thompsonville in Enfield. Today the Route 190 bridge continues to be an important link between east and west. Another important feature along the river is the Windsor Locks Canal completed in 1829 to allow shipping to bypass the Enfield Rapids. Today, there is a 5-mile long surfaced path between the Connecticut River and the Windsor Locks Canal from Suffield at the Enfield Dam to Windsor Locks town center that is excellent for bicycling, jogging or walking. There is fantastic fishing below the Enfield Dam. The canal trail and fishing areas can be accessed at the end of Canal Road. The federal government has designated the Connecticut River an American Heritage River. An advocacy group, the Connecticut River Watershed Council, works to keep the river clean and its watershed healthy.
