West Suffield Mountain - In addition to the Connecticut River and the Congamond Lakes, West Suffield Mountain is another very prominent geological feature of Suffield. The Mountain is part of the Metacomet Ridge, which runs from East Haven to West Suffield and includes Talcott Mountain and the Heublein Tower. The Mountain is comprised of volcanic traprock known as basalt. The Mountain is visible from several vantage points throughout town including Suffield Center. Mountain Road, Route 168, is Suffield's major east-west connector and it travels over West Suffield Mountain. Those who drive over the Mountain from the east are treated to a picturesque valley on the western side. The Metacomet Trail, a designated Blue Trail by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association, runs along the crest. The Mountain includes the highest point in the community at 710 ft. above sea level. A local civic group, the Suffield Land Conservancy, is actively pursuing the protection of the Metacomet Trail through the purchase of lands along the ridge.
