Town Green - The town's first meetinghouse was built upon this ground about 1680 "southeasterly from the burial place" leaving enough room on high ground for "training". The Suffield Town Green was established in the early days of the community and it served as a focus for religious, civic and educational activity over time. It slopes gently from the northwest to the southeast. Several species of healthy trees provide shade including sugar maple, pin oak, flowering dogwood, crabapple, and sycamore trees. Buildings representative of each period of its development since the mid-17th century, including some that are architecturally significant, surround the Green. Important institutions that anchor the green include Suffield Academy, First Congregational Church, Second Baptist Church and the Kent Memorial Library. In 1858 Henry Sykes redesigned it into three parts separated by intersecting streets. A bandstand which replicates the 19th century original is located in the center as well as several monuments including a Civil War Monument (1888) comprised of a Union soldier atop a tall base; a Revolutionary War Monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution; and a cannon. The Green is an elegant focal point for the town and is used for town gatherings, music festivals and fairs.
