T rees - Notable trees abound in Suffield. Stately shade trees line historic Main Street, as well as 114 dogwood trees, which bloom in colorful splendor in the spring. A 300-year-old sycamore shades the Phelps-Hatheway House Museum. Liberty elms are located at a local nursery. A descendent of the famous Connecticut Charter Oak stands watch in front of Suffield's Town Hall. Many residents look back fondly on the memory of the "Spencer Oak," a 325+ year-old chestnut oak that once stood on the west side of North Stone Street. The town's Tree Warden, the President of the Suffield Garden Club, and a tree expert serve on a committee to administer the Helena Bailey Spencer Tree Fund. This fund was established to plant and care for shade trees along town highways. The Conservation Commission is also encouraging the planting of shade trees and hopes to create a booklet that highlights Suffield's notable trees. Suffield trees provide the community with visual pleasure especially in the fall when the leaves change colors. The value of the trees goes far beyond aesthetics as they also help control erosion and help provide clean air.
