    1/16/2018 - Hartford Foundation for Public Giving Informational Meeting on Upcoming Grant Application Process - Thursday, January 18th 10 AM Suffield Police Department

     Dear friends,
     
    The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for grants of up to $25,000 each through the Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund.  It is projected that between five and ten grants will be awarded.  
     
    The Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund was established at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving by Michael J. Zak to honor the commitment, activism and dedicated years of service that Mike’s father, Amiel, devoted to the Suffield community.  Since its inception in 2002, 113 grants totaling $967,000 have been awarded. 
     
    Community-based organizations, civic associations, volunteer groups, and public agencies (in the limited circumstances described below) are invited to submit proposals for projects that will address basic needs or improve the quality of life for residents in Suffield.
     
    There will be an informational meeting at which Jay Williams, president of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and Michael Zak, founder of the Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund, will be present along with me to present information on the Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund and answer questions on the application process on:

    Any interested individuals are invited to attend this session, although attendance is not required to apply.
     
    Eligibility Criteria:
     
    Grants will be considered that benefit the general public as well as specific populations such as youth or the elderly.  Grants will be considered for a broad range of civic needs (e.g., education, recreation, health).  The successful project will demonstrate two or more of the following elements:
     
    ?  Expand resources for residents of Suffield;
    ?  Improve the quality of life for residents of Suffield;
    ?  Promote community service in the Town of Suffield; 
    ?  Inspire community spirit by motivating citizens to feel connected to, and responsible for, their community. 
     
     
    Proposals are encouraged for capital needs and specific items, and for program needs that are finite in duration or will become self-sustaining over time.  Requests that will leverage other support are encouraged.  
     
    Proposals for funding of planning activities and general operations are not encouraged. Projects that are viewed as the town’s responsibility will generally not be considered for support.  This fund is not intended to replace governmental funding of projects or needs that properly should be funded through the municipal appropriations process.   
     
    Projects that receive grants should be prepared to identify how they would provide a plaque or other visible way to acknowledge the Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

    If you have used the Foundation’s online application system for previous grants, please use your organization’s log-in information created at that time.  If you have not used the system, you will be asked to create an account by clicking the “New Applicant” link underneath the space where the e-mail address is entered.  After submission of your application, you will receive a system generated confirmation email.
     
    Applications are due to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving by February 9, 2018.  
     
    Grant decisions will be made in approximately 60 days.

    Amiel P. Zak Scholarship Fund
     
    In addition to the Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund, Michael Zak has established the Amiel P. Zak Scholarship Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.  This scholarship fund makes awards to graduating high school seniors of Suffield High School who have an acceptable academic record, will be attending a two- or four-year college, and have made contributions to the town of Suffield in or through organizations that support the safety, commonweal, or overall quality of life in Suffield in either volunteer or paid positions.  More information about this fund can be found by contacting the guidance office at Suffield High School.
